Toy Harrier Airplanes

This is a collection of both metal diecast and plastic Harrier toy airplanes manufactured over the past 30 years. It began with an ERTL Force One AV-8B II Harrier and a Matchbox Skybuster SB-27 Jump Jet and simply continued to grow. All the planes featured in this collection were marketed as toys. None of these are glue together kits, however, several of them did require minor assembly. I have over 100 different toy harriers so it will take time to add descriptions for each one.

Carved Wooden "Hobo" Sculptures

The story of America's hobos is the story of America herself; many immigrants arrived with little more than their wits to rely on. Some were skilled craftsmen who simply could not find steady work, so they traveled from town to town seeking employment.

As railroad tracks were laid across the land, the hobo found it easier to travel from one job to another.

Of course, paying for each ride was out of the question. So hopping outbound trains became a way of life for many hobos.

Americans have always been a generous people and would often provide temporary shelter or a warm meal. The hobo usually would not accept charity, but would gladly work or "sing" for his supper.

A sad side to hobo life was old age; elderly hobos after years of living on the road found themselves without family and in failing health. Occasionally, an old hobo would luck upon a position as hired hand with a caring family. Although the job rarely paid more than room and board, it often meant the difference between life and death to the old hobo. ••• Rick Ferry

Included with each sculpture image on this webpage are Rick's inovative "Blarney" introductions to each of his carving subjects. These stories make each sculpture extra special so be sure to read them all.

Toy Airplanes: Lithographed Tin Plate

TOY AIRPLANES
LITHOGRAPHED TIN PLATE

Toy manufacturers in many countries have been producing airplanes beginning around 1905. The early examples are scarce and valuable, and before my time! Though inspired by real subjects, toys of the years through the 1930s generally are quite stylized in appearance.

Although tin toy manufacture began in the United States during the nineteenth century, the most detailed and realistic examples originated in Germany and Japan after World War Two.

As a rule, tin toy planes are not flying models. Although many of them date from time eras in which flying was glamorous and luxurious, they have never been as popular, neither with children nor with collectors, as are motor vehicles and trains.

I purchased my first "vintage" example in 1986 and stepped up my purchases in the 1990s as I attended toy shows more frequently. My favorite, since I was quite young, is the Electra from the 1960s. It has lights on its propeller blades! These are amusing, and the battery-operated plane is quite beautiful when in action.

This collection features friction-powered and battery-powered toys made primarily in Japan from 1950 through the early 1970s. Many are made entirely out of lithographed tinplate; others have some plastic parts.

A fine reference book is Frederic Marchand's "Avions Jouets 1945-1970" (Paris: Editions Langlaude, 2004)

All the toys pictured are from my personal collection. I hope you enjoy the many shapes and colors!
