A few notes on the best selling record for 1956 -- in fact, one of the biggest records for all time. Elvis Presley was recorded at the famous Sun record studios in Memphis in 1954 and 1955 and sold well in the Memphis area. Early in 1956 RCA bought him awar from Sun for a bargain $32,000. "Hound dog" / "Don't Be Cruel" was Presley's third single for RCA, recorded on 2 July 1956, and almost overnight it jumped to the top of the charts and stayed there for an amazing ten weeks. Presley hesitated to sing "Hound Dog", he thought the song poor material. As it turned out, his decision to go ahead and record the Lieber-Stoller classic added to his profits. --Fred Fenger, 1970
