Squirl Collection: Postcards: 1940s-1990s

The 1940s postcards are all from Italy, and were originally collected by Roy Davenport, during his tour of duty in the Mediterranean theater of operations. His wife, Houlgate, gave them to me, along with some of his war memorabilia. The 1950s cards were collected by Marie Parker, who gave them to me in the 70s when I was a little kid, hanging around her house to ogle the old things and bum homemade cookies and hugs off her. (~-^) The 70s cards were given to me by my parents and older sister; the 80s cards were sent to me from travelling friends, and the 90s cards were mostly ones I bought for myself. I've enjoyed them all, and would like to expand the collection, someday! Oddly enough, I have no postcards from the 60s.

We did stay at this hotel, though all I remember of it was getting to play in the pool for about 5 minutes before my mom decided we needed to come back into the room and just sit there. My parents were weird, on vacations. (O.o)

I remember my parents took my sister and me to Arkansas several times, yet we never stayed at this inn, or saw the Passion Play, which is one reason my mom wanted to go up there. We always seemed to time our vacations when the play wasn't going on.

"Generic" everything was a big fad, in the 80s. It was funny, the first couple of times you saw it, but after the 5,000th "Generic" funny item, the funny-ness kinda wore off. This card has a checklist of items on the reverse, following "I'm sending you this card because..." and "Here in Telluride, I have been..." with choices such as "I'm having a ball--good thing you're not here" and "...falling down a lot." I'd have scanned the reverse, but the message is personal, and I don't feel like sharing that much. ;P

Caption on reverse reads: No Time to Be Young (Columbia Pictures, 1957) Robert (Man from U.N.C.L.E.) Vaughn gets top billing in this tale of three lads who hold up a supermarket and suffer severe difficulties with officers of the law thereafter. The fellow mashing his nose into the blonde's cheekbone is Roger Smith, who went on to star in 77 Sunset Strip and later married Ann-Margret. Which proves that rehabilitation of juvenile offenders is not only possible, but highly desirable.

I have no idea where I picked this card up. Probably somewhere my family and I had gone on vacation. It has no date, no caption, not even a copyright notice! But I can tell by the style of my handwriting on the back (I had started to address it to some unknown person, with the salutataion of "Hi! How's things?") helps me place it as late 1970s.
